The white brick facade and signage of Sweetwaters, a waterfront restaurant in Huizenga Park, above planted steps

Challenge

Great waterfronts are measured less by their buildings than by the everyday community moments they make possible. At the southeastern edge of the newly revitalized Huizenga Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Specialty Restaurants Corporation (SRC) partnered with Journey to create Sweetwaters Las Olas, a waterfront restaurant that would belong to the park as much as to its guests.

Developed over four years, the ground-up project asked Journey to shape both the building’s exterior architectural character, alongside JVB Architect, and its complete interior experience, as one cohesive design that celebrates its setting along the New River.

Solution

Journey designed Sweetwaters from the public realm inward. Envisioned as an extension of the reimagined park, the restaurant engages with the surrounding landscape and pedestrian pathways, inviting visitors to experience it as part of their local park rather than a building set apart from it.

In addition, two outdoor dining terraces and expansive windows reaching nearly 20 feet high maximize views of the park and river, while stacking doors open the southern dining room directly onto its adjacent terrace, blurring the line between inside and out.

“For our family, hospitality has always been about creating spaces that become part of the communities they serve.”

An everyday restaurant on the waterfront

Sweetwaters is designed as an all-day destination that follows the rhythm of the park. Morning coffee and breakfast welcome early walkers and commuters, an expansive lunch menu draws in the downtown crowd, and dinner carries the energy into the evening, so there’s always a reason for the community to stop by.

A restaurant inspired by the working waterfront

Inside, the restaurant’s design takes its cue from the city’s working waterfront. A warm industrial aesthetic draws inspiration from South Florida’s marinas and maritime infrastructure. The steel frames of dry docks, the winches and rigging of fishing trawlers, and the hard-working hardware of the marina inform the design language, balanced by lighter finishes and warm textures that create a bright, inviting atmosphere.

An expansive expo kitchen, a key element of SRC’s vision, brings the energy and craftsmanship of the culinary team into the dining room, inviting guests to watch the chefs at work, while an adjacent raw bar offers an intimate, front-row dining experience.

Lifted from the boatyard

Overhead, a prominent gantry spanning the bar and expo kitchen references the lifting mechanisms found in boatyards, evoking a sense of movement and functionality, as though the entire structure could be lifted or lowered into the sea at any moment.

Impact

More than a place to eat, Sweetwaters offers a welcoming place to gather, dine, and connect with Fort Lauderdale’s evolving public waterfront, becoming part of the shared story of the park and the people around it.
