Dimension, a Journey studio, brought together two of the biggest musical groups, as Coldplay and BTS collaborated on several volumetric projects that were out of this world.

Coldplay / Warner Music Group approached Dimension, a Journey studio to help create a music video for “My Universe”, a collaboration between Coldplay and BTS, with the ability to extend the holograms into innovative live shows, including the final of The Voice USA and onstage at Glastonbury 2024’s Pyramid Stage.

Volumetric capture was key to bringing the bands together via stylised holograms that fit the “otherworldly” music video concept. Performances of the four members of Coldplay were captured inside our mobile studio Polymotion Stage. Chris Martin’s performance, as well as those of Jonny Buckland (guitar) and Guy Berryman (bass), were captured in volumetric in-camera. In contrast, Will Champion’s drum performance was tracked with mocap, then modelled and recreated in post-production.

Both Coldplay and BTS were volumetrically captured on opposite ends of the planet, before their holograms were seamlessly intertwined – not only for the music video, but live on the finale of The Voice USA and onstage at Glastonbury 2024.

Holograms, spaceships, and two of the world’s biggest bands are a hit. Eight million viewers were captivated by the performance on The Voice, while the music video sits at 335 million hits.

Working with our Microsoft Mixed Reality partners, Jump Studio in Seoul, we captured all seven members of BTS in volumetric form. Dimension, a Journey studio then processed every performance to ensure quality and maintain creative consistency across the group.

All of the volumetric assets were then used to create the song’s music video and integrated into multiple live performances, including one of the world’s largest stages at Glastonbury Festival during Coldplay’s headline set.
