Set beside Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune on the coast of North Carolina, the newly opened Carolina Museum of the Marine was created as a living tribute to character, courage, and commitment. The civic space is shaped around the people, stories and families connected to the Marine Corps.

Challenge
This museum experience needed to communicate the scale and significance of Marine Corps history while remaining personal, accessible and deeply connected to the Carolina community. It balances military history with the voices of Marines, veterans and families, translating complex events and lived experiences into engaging stories for visitors of all ages, without overshadowing the people at the heart of the story.

Solution
Working alongside exhibition designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates, Journey developed the storytelling strategy and experiences throughout the museum’s galleries. Journey crafted a series of interactive experiences combining archival footage, contemporary interviews, spatial sound and projection to create experiences that feel human, reflective and deeply rooted in place.
From the earliest stages of the project, Journey focused on defining how media could deepen emotional connection, amplify personal stories and bring the museum’s narratives to life through immersive environments.
Immersive History
Experiences include a WWII training camp tent brought to life through layered projection, silhouette animation and ambient soundscapes that recreate the rhythms of daily life within a Marine camp environment. In the Pacific Theater gallery, visitors encounter a large scale immersive landing sequence surrounding an LVT vehicle, where projected visuals and archival footage place guests within the tension and intensity of amphibious assault warfare. Elsewhere, interactive aviation displays allow visitors to explore the operational capabilities of Marine aircraft while triggering cinematic launch and in-flight sequences across large format media walls.

Lived Experience
Journey also developed a series of people-led storytelling experiences designed to communicate the ethos, values and emotional realities behind military service The material was shaped through time spent within the Marine community. Conversations and interviews with active-duty Marines, retirees, veterans, military families, local community members, and those preparing to enlist brought firsthand stories and lived experiences into the heart of the narrative.
Always Training combines historic and contemporary footage with first person reflections from Marines across generations, exploring the transformation from recruit to graduate and the lasting impact of training and discipline. Family and Community shifts the focus toward the families and support networks surrounding service life, using intimate testimonies and recorded voices to highlight sacrifice, resilience and shared identity across the Carolinas, embedding this museum in the Carolina Marine community by featuring Carolina Marines.
The experience culminates in Always Faithful, a cinematic final film bringing together recruits, active duty Marines and veterans through a distinctly Carolina lens. Blending emotive storytelling, archival references and an uplifting soundscape, the experience reinforces the museum’s central idea: that the Marine Corps story is ultimately a human one.

The museum preserves history, while creating a shared space where generations can connect, personal stories can be recognised and the contribution of the wider Marine community can be understood and celebrated.
